Old Porch Post Repurposed into Coat Rack

Last year, while visiting my parents, I noticed that they had a few salvaged porch posts in their barn. I immediately had a vision for one of them, but it took me a while to act on it. I pictured it with iron shelf brackets added to the bottom, so that it would stand upright and iron hooks added to the top to create a coat rack. I also pictured the coat rack being painted white. The vintage market that we did earlier this month had a shabby white, turquoise and pink theme to it  and this coat rack that I had been thinking about for quite some time was going to fit our theme perfectly!

Springtime Floral Wreath in Galvanized Container

I've finished up a couple more of those projects that I had started last week. I seem to have been on a red and black kick.   I'll be sharing those projects soon, but not today.   Today I wanted to share a little more Spring inspiration!

so when I found these containers for 80% off last summer I grabbed four of them.

I Joined the Chalkboard Bandwagon

We all know that chalkboards have been super popular lately.   I finally decided to try my hand at making one.   Last year I found the perfect frame for a chalkboard, but I tucked it away.  

 



Valentines Day XO Hugs & Kisses Pillow Covers

Just before Thanksgiving I made pillow covers from ticking fabric. I added vintage images to the front of these pillows by printing the images onto creamy white duckcloth fabric.   They turned out really cute, you can check them out here.   I also made 4 solid pillow covers out of the creamy white duckcloth fabric  to coordinate with the ticking pillows.   Today I decided to turn two of those solid pillow covers into Valentines Day pillows.    

 

Burlap and a Dollar Tree Ornament

During a recent trip to the Dollar Tree to pick up a gift bag,  a package of 6 glittery snowflake ornaments made their way into my cart.  

  Believe it or not, this creation was not what I had in mind when I purchased the snowflakes.   I'll get around to creating my original idea and post about it later...  

Rustic Pine Cone and Burlap Wreath

Here's another quick and easy, simple and neutral wreath.

Rustic Burlap and White Pumpkin Fall Wreath

Oh how I love fall. The scents, the cooler temps, the colors, the coziness of it all.

I wasn't going to start decorating for Fall until the first weekend in October, but with the temps dropping a little and all of the wonderful inspiration around, I just couldn't help myself. I had to make something for Fall. I dug around in my craft stash and found a few things that got me started on this wreath.

I love the neutral, rusticness of it. (is that a word?)

 

In my craft stash I found everything I needed to make this wreath. I had 6 faux orange pumpkins, scrap burlap, twine, stencils, paint and a grapevine wreath.  

 

 

First, the orange pumpkins were getting a creamy white makeover to start this project.

I removed the brown stems from the pumpkins so that they wouldn't get painted white. I put them back in after the pumpkins were dry. I stuck the pumpkin floral pick stems in styrofoam so that I could spray them from all angles. This took a couple of coats of paint. In between these coats I started making the GIVE burlap pennant banner.

 

I cut a length of twine and also cut four 2" wide by 2 1/2" long triangles out of a manilla file folder to use for the letter pennants. I cut squares of burlap large enough to fold over the twine and cover both sides of the manilla triangles. With spray adhesive glue I attached the burlap to the triangle and them trimmed around it. I did this for each of the four letters.

Once the pennant banner was ready and the pumpkins were dry, I painted the letters on using stick on reusable stencils and black acrylic paint.

Notice the brown pumpkin stems are back on the pumpkins now :)

 

I was stumped at this point because the grapevine wreath I had wasn't large enough to accomodate all of my pumpkins without making the word THANKS look funny.

 

Then I remembered a different grapevine wreath, kindof a basket type, that I had picked up at a yard sale for a buck earlier this summer. It was larger and because it had an open basket type bottom, it worked great!

 

I tied the twine ends from the pennant around the top part of the wreath and started arranging the pumpkins on the bottom part. I used the stems to weave through the grapevine to hold them in place. The wreath looked a little bare at this point, so I added fall leaves and didn't like them and started looking for something else. That's when I found some preserved green moss. I placed it around the pumpkins and I think it was the finishing touch that the wreath needed. It kept it neutral, but added a little pop.

 

 

 

I'm thinking I'm liking the white pumpkins this year.

Don't Throw that Away - Furniture Salvage Upcycled into a Coat Rack

You gotta love other peoples trash!

 

This piece of furniture salvage was going to be discarded because most of the ornate wood carvings were broken and had fallen off of it. I loved the shape of it and was more than happy to save it from the burn pile.

 

 

 

This is a picture after I had removed the broken trim pieces and had cleaned it up and sanded it. I was able to keep the trim piece in the top center. I like that it adds a little something to it.

 

 

Once this was sanded, I painted it a creamy off-white color, distressed the edges a little and gave it a clear matte finish.

 

 

 

 

Originally I was thinking I wanted to make this piece into a sign that said ANTIQUES on it, but then I changed my mind. Coat rack kept coming to mind now.  The next step was to visit a Hobby Lobby to see if they had any hooks that caught my eye and they did! I grab 4 of these brass hooks while they were on 50% off and also purchased a package of brass screws to attach them with.

 

 

 

 

Attaching the hooks was trickier than it would seem. A five minute task turned into a half an hour task. Two of the screws did not want to screw in. I'm guessing it was because the wood might have had a knot where I was trying to screw them in at. I had to predrill small holes in order to get the screws to go in. Then the head of one of the screws broke off while screwing it in. Now I had to figure out how to remove a broken screw that was sharp and sticking out of the wood. Needlenose pliers eventually did the job of removing the broken screw. Finally, all four hooks were securely attached and the coat rack was finished!

 

 

 

 

I'm always looking at things with a creative eye to see what I can turn it into.

 I love how this piece turned out, but I don't have the room for it in our little log cabin so it's going in my Etsy shop.

 

 

I'm off to start another project!
