Cabinet Doors Repurposed into Dairy Signs

Where has the time gone. This past week has flown by, but it always does when you are at the beach!!!   My husband surprised me with an unexpected blessing. He was asked to deliver a car to Fort Myers Beach, Florida. We were only responsible for our food and lodging, they were covering gas, a rental car and paying him for his time driving down and back! We couldn't pass up the opportunity and so we were off. It was a long drive, but sooo worth it!   This beach girl was back in her element! We were able to spend a lot of time walking and relaxing along Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva Island. We enjoyed great meals at waterfront restaurants and soaked up as much sunshine and warmth as we could before heading home to more freezing temps.     Now we're back home and back to working on projects. The project I decided to work on first was repurposing two old kitchen cabinet doors. I picked them up at a Habitat Restore in Blue Ridge, Georgia a couple weeks ago, while visiting my mom.   

    They started off looking like this.

Headboard Repurposed into Bon Appetit Sign

Last week I mentioned that I had been on a red and black kick.   Today, I want to share one of the red projects I finished.  

 

 

 

This sign started out as part of a headboard.

 

Vintage Style Handmade Horse Boarding Livery Sign

My makeover Monday project for this week started off as a plywood cut out silhouette of a running horse.   I found it at a thrift store for $3 and thought it was neat, but I had no idea what I was going to do with it.    

(it wasn't painted when I bought it, it was raw plywood)     This horse had been stashed away in my workshop for quite a while and then... ...inspiration struck!   I decided to create a Livery and Boarding sign, using the horse as the focal point.

While I was staring out of the window of my workshop, hoping that we would get some snow today, I noticed the box of old horseshoes, that my neighbor gave me, sitting on my workbench.   They got my mind thinking about what else I could make with them.   With St. Patrick's Day coming up, I had the inclination to make a sign that said LUCKY,  using one of the horseshoes as the U.   but then, I thought, what about a sign that said COWGIRL UP. That would be more my speed.   Don't get me wrong.  I'm not a cowgirl, unless owning a few pair of cowboy boots and line dancing qualifies.  

 

I cleaned up a piece of barnwood that I had leftover from building the kitchen cabinets in our cabin.

Burlap and a Dollar Tree Ornament

During a recent trip to the Dollar Tree to pick up a gift bag,  a package of 6 glittery snowflake ornaments made their way into my cart.  

  Believe it or not, this creation was not what I had in mind when I purchased the snowflakes.   I'll get around to creating my original idea and post about it later...  

Rustic Wood Framed Faux Winter Chalkboard

  Waking up to the coolest temps so far this Fall and the first frost this morning, makes this faux chalkboard art seem appropriate.  

 

I had been given this rustic wood frame back in the summer and have held onto it until now.

I love that it has the bark left on the outer edges.

 

 

 

Chalkboards are super "IN" right now and I have yet to create one, but it is on my list of projects. You know that list, the one that never seems to end.

I just couldn't part with this old crate

My mom brought me an old fruit crate that she found during a trip to Connecticut. I loved the age and rustic appeal that it had, but I couldn't imagine it working in a practical way as a crate. The sides and bottom were made from thin boards and some of those boards were split, but I just couldn't part with the crate.  So, I began carefully taking it apart. 

I had intentions of using the two ends to make signs out of. They were made from thicker boards and had a trim piece of wood at the top and bottom. They had old nails holding them together and a lot of rustic charm.

The first sign I wanted to make was going to say FARM FRESH. I found a simple font and printed the letters out on paper in the size that I wanted to use as a template.

The next step was to color the back of the letters with chalk.

Then placing the paper with the chalk side down and the letters facing up, I traced each letter with a pencil to make a chalk outline on the wood.

I painted the letters with white paint and outlined them with a permanent black sharpie marker.

I sanded the paint a little to distress it and sprayed a clear matte finish over it to protect it. Then I added two eyelets to the top so that I could attach rusty wire to use as a hanger and then...

...more inspiration hit!

Remember the thin boards from the bottom of the crate that were splitting?

 I decided to cut 3 smaller signs from them to hang from this sign.

Using the same chalk, trace and paint technique, I made signs saying EGGS, DAIRY and PRODUCE.

While I was cutting the smaller signs I also drilled small holes on the top and bottom of each end of each sign. I wanted to run rusty wire through them to hang them on the FARM FRESH sign. I also attached two eyelets to the bottom of the FARM FRESH sign and started weaving the wire through each sign.

Once the wire was ran through each sign and attached to the main part - this sign was finished!

I only wish I had space to hang it in my own home. I love how it turned out and that I was able to use the crate!

Here's what I did with the other end of the crate.

There are a few small pieces of the sides of the crate left. Maybe inspiration will hit me at some point and I'll have the perfect project to use them on.
